New York, NY – Today, NIU officially has smart electric mopeds on the roads of the United States. Revel Transit, the app-based electric moped sharing service, is deploying 950 NIU electric mopeds in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. The expansion to the U.S. market comes as NIU extends its global footprint beyond Europe and Asia to the Americas, where it plans to introduce a new generation of Americans to “scooter” culture, but without the gasoline and noise.
NIU sells a variety of electric mopeds both directly to the end consumer and to moped sharing services in more than 28 countries. Since launching in August 2015, NIU has sold more than 710,000 smart electric mopeds, making it the global leader in smart electric two-wheelers. NIU’s strong global sales growth propelled it to a Nasdaq IPO in October 2018.
“The United States doesn’t have a ‘scooter’ culture like you will find in Europe, but we believe this is all about to change as more millennials living in cities look for new smart, convenient, and electric forms of personal transportation,” says Yan Li, NIU CEO and co-founder, “and a sharing service like Revel is the perfect way to get this younger generation riding electric mopeds.”
All of NIU’s mopeds are connected to the cloud that allow users to track things like recent rides, battery level, estimated range, and theft protection. NIU will bring a total of four consumer ready models to the U.S. in 2019, including the NQiGT, NQisport, MQi+sport, and the soon to be released UQi+.
NIU’s official distribution partner for the United States is Genuine Scooters, based in Chicago, Illinois, who bring more than two decades of moped sales experience to the partnership. NIU and Genuine will be targeting retail sales in key urban markets with a high density of millennials and universities, such as NYC, Chicago, Austin, SF, LA, Miami, Phoenix, and Boston. The NIU mopeds will be in retailers by the end of Q3 2019. NIU will also be launching an online-to-offline ecommerce strategy with premium retail partners, allowing customers to shop online, and pick-up their moped at a local dealer who will assist in state registrations and aftersales service. All NIU models are DOT certified.
